CHAPTER 7

A TRIPLE THREAT?

Michael sat in study hall in Mrs. Myers’s classroom, working on his math problems, when the classroom PA system chimed.

“Mrs. Myers? Can you send Michael to Coach Perry’s office, please? Thank you.”

The teacher nodded to Michael as he grabbed his book bag and left the classroom.

I wonder what Coach wants, he thought as he stood in front of the coach’s door.

Slowly opening the door, Michael peeked his head into the office. “You wanted to see me, Coach?” he said.

Coach Perry smiled. “Yes, come in and have a seat.”

Michael sat down in a chair near the head coach’s desk.

“Michael, you’ve played a lot of different positions during practice this week. And we play against Carterville tomorrow.”

“Yes, Coach,” replied Michael.

“You picked up on the defensive side of the ball and special teams really fast,” Coach Perry continued. “I talked to Coach Howard and Coach Brackett. We want you to play defensive back on third-down situations on defense. And we want you to be the new starting kick and punt returner.”

Michael thought deeply while rubbing his chin. “Can I still play wide receiver?”

“Yes, you’ll still get to play some wide receiver when Darren, Leo, and Erving need a break,” replied the coach. “By you taking on multiple roles, you’ll give us a better chance to win.”

“If it helps the team, then I’ll do it, Coach,” Michael said. He shook Coach Perry’s hand.
